We are currently taking orders for package bees. We expect to start supplying packages in mid-to-late October, depending on the weather.

Italian Bees

A package contains 4lbs of bees and a mated queen. Each pound of bees is likely to contain an average of 3500-4000 bees; a 4lb package should be equivalent to 12000-14000 bees, depending upon the nectar flow.

A package is an economical and practical way to start a healthy hive.

Our package bees are supplied from established breeders in Western NSW.

What is the advantage of a package over a nuc?

Package bees have more diversity. They contain a new queen, and more bees than you get in a nuc. Because you don't get any comb, packages are also less likely to spread disease. They are easy to transport and install and are easier to install in warre hives, top bar hives, etc. Packages are available earlier in the spring compared to nucs. Another advantage that package bees offer to beginner beekeepers is that they can observe the bees building out the comb from scratch.

How long will I have to wait to get my bees?

Waiting time for our package bees depends on breeding conditions and weather, but should be around 15-20 days.

We give customers as much notice as possible before packages are ready to be collected. You can collect your bees from either the Hornsby or Mount Druitt branch.

Please note that the shelf life of a package of bees is no more than three days. If you're unavailable when the bees are, we are happy to save your order until you're available. Unfortunately we can't guarantee that package bees will be available on a specific date. Bees are fickle creatures sometimes and package availability is subject to many factors.

How do I install my package bees?

Do not install packages in an existing yard of bees--they will drift into an established hive. It's far better to install on or after dark to stop drifting. If you try to install in a daylight on a warm day, major drifting will occur and you may even end up with huge swarms hanging in a tree.

You should feed the new colony strong white sugar solution for at least a week to helps bees draw comb on the frames, and to give them more energy to forage. Feeding sugar will help keep your girls as strong and productive as possible in the crucial first week that they are in the hive.

HBS strongly recommend that you use brand new gear for your package of bees. Dead out hive gear could potentially have bacterial spores. Please view the embedded video for a demonstration.

Please let our friendly staff know if you would like us to walk you through the process in-store.
