ACORN Drone Comb Frame – Green

Create a clearly identifiable area for drone brood with the green ACORN Drone Comb Frame from Hornsby Beekeeping Supplies. Manufactured in the USA from durable commercial-grade plastic, this integrated frame is designed for regular apiary use.

The larger drone-cell pattern encourages bees to draw drone comb rather than standard worker comb. Furthermore, the bright green colour makes the frame easy to distinguish during hive inspections, queen-rearing work or planned drone-brood management.

Because the frame and foundation are combined into one plastic unit, there is no need to assemble a timber frame, install wire or fit a separate foundation sheet.

Using a Drone Comb Frame

A drone comb frame encourages bees to raise drones within one organised and easily located area. As a result, beekeepers can inspect and manage drone brood without searching through irregular comb built along frame edges or beneath bottom bars.

Queen breeders may use drone frames in selected colonies to encourage drones from desirable genetics. However, timing is important because drones must reach maturity before virgin queens begin their mating flights.

Drone brood can also be used as part of an integrated Varroa management programme. Varroa mites are more attracted to drone brood because drone cells remain capped for longer.

When using the frame for drone-brood trapping, remove the capped frame before adult drones emerge. Otherwise, reproducing mites may return to the colony. Drone-brood removal should not be treated as the only Varroa-control method.

Cleaning and Reuse

After removing old comb, carefully scrape away loose wax and debris. Avoid boiling water or excessive heat because high temperatures may warp the plastic.

Allow the frame to dry fully before storage or reuse, and follow good apiary hygiene practices to prevent transferring pests or disease between colonies.
